Job Description Summary

The Office of Academic Advising provides intentional advising primarily to 1st and 2nd year student in the science and health care fields striving to enhance student success. The advising office is seen as a critical office providing support and resources to students to enhance retention at the University. The office is part of the integrated Student Success Center, which includes academic advising, career services, tutorial services, and the writing center. The Professional Advisor will work to support and develop students using the tenets of student development theory.

This is a 10-month position.

Required Qualification Summary

Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Student Affairs, Student Development, Psychology, Educational Psychology, or a related discipline.

One year experience in teaching college level courses.

Two years of experience in academic advising.

Understanding of application of FERPA.

Demonstrated experience providing direct support for students at risk.

Demonstrated supervisory skills leading professional and administrative staff.

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to serve the needs of a culturally diverse student population.

Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on detail.

Strong analytical skills including data gathering, analysis, assessment and evaluation, and evidence based planning.

Proficient in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Access, Datatel, BlackBoard, or other related software packages.

The finalist will be required to successfully pass a background check.

Physical Demands

No or very limited physical effort required.

Essential Duties

Management of an advisee case load of no more than 150 students utilizing an intrusive advising model.

Advisement of students on a variety of issues including transition and adjustment to the University, setting goals, developing an educational and personal plan, providing referrals to campus resources, selecting and scheduling courses, career exploration, monitoring student progress, assisting in transition issues.

Implementation of Academic Improvement Plan with first and second year students on academic probation.

Participation in a collateral assignment (ie. University Committee, Task Force, Peer Mentoring Program) focused on student satisfaction and/or retention.

Supporting all student who are academic-at-risk regardless of advisor assignment.

Preforms other duties as assigned.

Instruct a section of Developing Academic Success (AD-100) each semester.

Meet with students outside of instruction time to provide feedback and support.
