Job Description Summary

The Pharmacy Program Academic Advisor will provide direct academic advising services and learning support to students throughout the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. This position will report directly to the Associate Dean of PCP Student Affairs and Admissions.

Required Qualification Summary

Master’s degree in education, or related area.

The position requires a minimum of two years full time academic advising experience in higher education, preferably health care based higher education. Also required is a minimum of one year teaching college level courses to first or second year undergraduates.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate an understanding of first year student issues, professional education student issues, issues for at risk students, professional education student issues, and the ability to work with a diverse student population.
An understanding of the issues surrounding inter professional education is also desirable.
The candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators across the University community.
The finalist will be required to successfully pass a background check.

Essential Duties

• Identify and support “at risk” students in the professional years of the curriculum. Implement academic outreach initiatives and early intervention strategies. Develop academic improvement plans, success skills, academic goals, etc.
• Advisor to “special” students – transfer students, mixed schedules students and support their growth, development and retention
• Assist students with the transition and adjustment to the University, including setting goals, developing an educational plan, providing referrals to campus resources, selecting and scheduling courses, and monitoring progress.
• Develop, implement, and assess faculty advising/mentoring program
• Train and assist PCP Faculty in their advising roles
• Implement programs to increase student utilization of advisors and improve relationships within college
• Match incoming professional students with faculty advisors
• Back-up advisor for faculty who are occasionally not able to meet with their advisees
• Update, with the Student Academic Specialist, training materials for faculty advisors on an annual basis and in collaboration with the Department of Academic Advising
• Edit and update PCP advising publications in collaboration with the Associate Registrar, Student Academic Specialist and Associate Dean
• Congratulatory emails to students for academic, athletic, and other achievements
• Member of PCP Student Affairs & Academic Standards Committees
• Participate in University committees related to academic advising
• Participate in accreditation initiatives related to student affairs
• Help with manual review of academic records of PCP students at the end of each semester
• Participate in PERC interview process; serve as back up interviewer during PERC and transfer student interviews in addition to regular allotment
• Co-advise PCP student council
• Participate in recruitment and retention events (open houses, orientation, etc.)
• Lead PCP’s communication efforts; develop regular internal newsletter, distribute news to local, regional, and national professional organizations
