Job Description Summary

The Department of Campus Recreation will deliver high quality and comprehensive service in support of the University mission; as it applies to working with our students, visitors, faculty members, departments, and surrounding community. As a graduate assistant in the Campus Recreation Department, you will be afforded opportunities and experiences in leadership, management, decision- making, and experiential learning. This is a 10-month long position from August 1st-May 30th.

The graduate assistants for the campus recreation program are responsible for assisting in the overall planning and execution of all areas of campus recreation including but not limited to personal training, group fitness, campus-wide events, etc. This position will also be active in other aspects of campus recreation as needed such as engaging in program committees, meetings, functions, program-specific training, and large-scale special events and initiatives. The graduate assistants for campus recreation will hold regular office hours as well as weekend and evening work expected.

Required Qualification Summary

Must have a strong background working in campus recreation and programming.

Bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a graduate program with a background in exercise and sports science, sport management, recreation management, fitness and health management or related fields.

Individual should have excellent team work skills as well as excellent background in training/evaluating/assessing officiating and mechanics; some knowledge of group fitness, personal training, and facility management; oral and written communication skills, basic computer skills

Finalist will be required to successfully pass a background check.


Preferred Qualification Summary

A candidate with at least two years of experience working with or supervising campus recreation activities and holding group fitness/personal training certifications is highly preferred.

No or very limited physical effort required.

Essential Duties

Continue to advance the campus recreation program at USciences including but not limited to daily activity administration, special event coordination, recruiting, hiring, training, and development of student staff, assessment practices, reviews, reports, facilities management and follow-up with other duties being assigned as needed.

Implements and executes student staff morale activities, i.e. multicultural and staff appreciation dinners.

Manages and operates the student work-study and non-work study budget.

Oversee the processing of payroll timecards for front desk and fitness area student staff members

Assist in planning and executing a comprehensive recreational sports program that includes intramural sports, fitness programming and special events.

Secures sponsorships for special events, i.e. The Femi Memorial Tournament.

Oversees and manages locker rental sales.

Oversees and/or performs a range of diverse administrative activities for the department or organizational unit

Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings, and workshops

Provides and/or oversees support activities for the unit such as answering telephones, assisting and resolving problems and inquiries of visitors, review and control of incoming and outgoing correspondence, and follow-up on operational commitments.

Provide evening and/or weekend supervision as required for recreational programming and special events
