Job Description Summary

The Director of Student Life provides overall leadership and management of the Department of Student Life. The Department of Student Life includes the following areas: Residence Life, Greek Life, Off-Campus-Living, International Student Services, Student Activities, Campus Programming, Leadership Development, the Student Government Association.

The Director is responsible for the supervision of the Associate Director of Student Life for Orientation, Greek Life, & Student Activities; the Associate Director of Student Life for Residence Life & Off-campus Student Services, an International Student Specialist, and an Administrative Coordinator. This individual reports to the Associate Dean of Students.

Required Qualification Summary

Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration, College Student Development, or a related field and at least five years of full-time experience in Student Life and/or Leadership Development programs, including the supervision of professional staff and oversight of at least three programs.

Must possess excellent verbal, written, inter-personal, managerial, budgetary, and presentation skills.

Must have a proven track record of developing student leadership initiatives, addressing the needs of multicultural students, and advancing Student Life operations.

Must have experience assessing operations, utilizing best practices, and developing, interpreting, and reviewing policies.

Must be willing to work evening and weekends on occasion.

Essential Duties

Supervision and Administration:

Collaborates with staff and key stakeholders to establish unit goals and procedures for assessing goal attainment. Ensures that unit goals are assessed at regular intervals and assessment findings are considered by appropriate stakeholders and used in ongoing planning. When appropriate, develops action plans that are based on assessment findings, consistent with unit, division and institutional missions, and linked to resources.

Act as budget officer for the Student Life budgets (Residence Life, Greek Life, Orientation, Campus Diversity and Leadership Development) and assign other resources among the areas and functions to meet students’ priorities within established budget parameters.

Participates in the on-call duty rotation for campus related emergencies.

Serve on various University Committees.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Residence Life:

Provide vision for the development and administration of the housing program by directly supervising the Associate Director of Student Life for Residence Life & Off-campus Student Services.

Coordinate effective crisis management procedures for the area of residence life.

Assess residence life needs through surveys, evaluations of staff, programs, and services.

Collaborate with University stakeholders in setting and implementing housing enrollment goals.

Major Student Events:

Develop and administer comprehensive new student orientation programs in collaboration with other University offices that are designed to ease the transition of incoming first-year, transfer, and graduate students into the academic and extracurricular life of the University and the local community.

Oversee planning, implementation and assessment of major student-centered activities, programs and services including: New Student Orientation, Student Appreciation Days, Welcome Week Activities, MLK Day of Service, and First-Year Experience Programs.

Greek Life:

Oversee the area of Greek Life by directly supervising the Associate Director of Student Life for Orientation, Greek Life, and Student Activities

Provide comprehensive training, leadership, and risk management programs for Greek-letter organizations.

Leadership Development:

Develop comprehensive leadership and training programs for Resident Advisors, Orientation Leaders, Inter-Greek Council, the Student Government Association, and other student leaders.

Create and maintain a leadership website as a resource for students and student leaders.

Serve as a resource in the area of leadership development for on/off-campus constituents.

Campus Diversity:

Provide leadership for the University community to enhance appreciation and understanding of diversity issues and experiences including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ability, and increase understanding of their influence in personal and interpersonal development, communication, and learning.

Develop effective partnerships between academic and non-academic departments of the University that promote and support institutional diversity and inclusiveness and advance the University’s mission.
International Student Services

Supervision of the International Student Specialist (ISS). The ISS serves as the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) for the University and is responsible for ensuring institutional and individual compliance with federal immigration regulations and government policies as they pertain to international students F-1 students.
